Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey...Stuff
2005 was when it all started when I became obsessed with a mad man in a blue box.
I remember it clearly, I had been in Cape Town for 5 years and I was sitting alone and looking for something to watch when David Tennant popped up on the screen on Mnet.
I had heard of the Doctor but had never had the opportunity to see what all the fuss was about. That evening my life changed forever. The theme song was now in my soul.
An obsession started that won't end especially now that the husband is into it. He has gotten as far as Matt Smith and the Ponds going..spoilers sweety! So it's still early days but enough for him to also declare Number 10 as his favourite Doctor and disliking Rose.
Sorry to the fans that love her, I never did.
I have a TARDIS(Time And Relative Dimensions In Space) purse thanks to my brother that gets me. A couple of Lego figurines, not taken out of the packaging, a spatula( that's a weird one that a frenemy gave me), two tees and of course a sonic screwdriver that both my dogs are scared of. Not to mention the fan books and ringtones on my phone over the years.
I have never watched Classic Who but know of all those doctors because when I get obsessed I research. Plus the movie the Five(ish) Doctors Reboot was a great way to get me into the older crew and so when Tom Baker appeared in one of the most iconic episodes I was cheering with the rest of them.
I also want a scarf like his and had used his line of offering jelly babies at work for a whole year and no one knew that I was just trying to be like the Fourth Doctor. Not that anyone there knew anything about Doctor Who, in fact, I doubt they still do. It is very much a either you know or you don't kind of fandom.
I mean it started in 1963 and we are now on the Thirteenth Doctor, Fourteenth if you count the War Doctor..spoilers sweety! That's over 50 years and just one movie that I still need to watch. Not to mention the numerous iterations of the iconic theme tune. None of which fill my soul with more joy than the husband's take whenever we start a new season.
The budget has improved over the years but mostly when you're a fan you colour in what you're seeing. It's all about the story really and the best ones are where you're reminded of how special humans are.
Even after all these years, my favourite episodes still hit me from the terror of "Are you my Mummy?" to "Hello Sweety". Ah, River, if I have a child, I want to name them River Song, she has been my favourite character from the show. The Vincent van Gogh episode had me howling again and I swear if I ever see a Weeping Angel I might widdle myself.
From Cybermen to the Daleks to the Ood to The Master himself or herself..spoilers again sweety! It has and continues to be quite a wild ride.
I like to think that The Doctor is trying to remind me that life is to live and that I am an important human because humans are important. Of the life lessons, here are a few:
1. The universe is big. It’s vast and complicated and ridiculous. And sometimes, very rarely, impossible things just happen and we call them miracles.
2. Do what I do. Hold tight and pretend it’s a plan!
3. I am and always will be the optimist. The hoper of far-flung hopes and the dreamer of improbable dreams.
4. The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.
5. You don’t just give up. You don’t just let things happen. You make a stand! You say no! You have the guts to do what’s right, even when everyone else just runs away.
6. Some people live more in 20 years than others do in 80. It’s not the time that matters, it’s the person.
7. You know, the very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common: they don’t alter their views to fit the facts; they alter the facts to fit their views.
8. Never cruel or cowardly. Never give up, never give in.
9. There’s a lot of things you need to get across this universe. Warp drive… wormhole refractors… You know the thing you need most of all? You need a hand to hold.
10. People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint — it’s more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly… time-y wimey… stuff.
11. Amy Pond, there’s something you’d better understand about me ‘cause it’s important, and one day your life may depend on it: I am definitely a madman with a box!
12. Don’t blink. Don’t even blink. Blink and you’re dead. Don’t turn your back. Don’t look away. And don’t blink.
13. I’ll be a story in your head. That’s OK. We’re all stories in the end. Just make it a good one, eh? ‘Cause it was, you know. It was the best. The daft old man who stole a magic box and ran away. Did I ever tell you that I stole it? Well, I borrowed it. I was always going to take it back.
14. Rose, before I go, I just want to tell you: you were fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. And you know what? So was I.
15. Because every time you see them happy you remember how sad they're going to be. And it breaks your heart. Because what's the point in them being happy if they're going to be sad later? The answer is, of course, because they are going to be sad later.
16. Never be cruel. Never be cowardly. Remember, hate is always foolish and love is always wise. Always try to be nice, but never fail to be kind.
17. Great men are forged in fire. It is the privilege of lesser men to light the flame.
18. Everything's got to end sometime. Otherwise, nothing would ever get started.
My goodness, it is good to be a Whovian and to hope for the chance to be a Companion to travel through space and time with the Doctor. They better be prepared for one husband, two woofs and my parents when they come to get me though!
Doo weeee doooo!
