With Great Power...
comes great responsibility!
I have been a Spiderman fan for as long as I can remember, which is a long time. I didn't see the Zulu dubbed version but I did catch the later series that gets used a lot for mock memes.
Regardless Spiderman is and always will be my favourite superhero, marking me a webhead for life. I watched the classic cartoons and all the movies, I own several comic books and love all of it.
And so upon seeing the latest movie Spiderman: No way Home, my heart just burst. It was everything I wanted and more especially after being firmly for the multiverse and enjoying a range of different Spidermans over the years.
Why do I like Spiderman? What makes him better or rather what makes him my favourite? Well, he is an underdog, a teenager who is facing everyday teenage angst with now the added responsibility of taking care of his neighbourhood. Hence the Friendly Neighbourhood Spiderman line - he is a kid going through the normal stuff with so much more spooned on top! Stan Lee ( may he rest in peace) didn't create a superhero, he created a human being that we can relate to.
I often related to him at different parts of my life for different reasons. As a child, I purely loved superheroes in general and marvelled at one having superpowers. ( See what I did there?!) I loved seeing him swing around, making jokes, that mostly went way above my little head, and fight the bad guys in his neighbourhood. He was keeping the place safe for those he loved and that appealed to me.
As I got older I got most of the jokes and appreciated them, I understood why Peter Parker did it. You would too if you were a scared kid trying to do the right thing in a very scary situation. He was also not popular and was a way for him to build his confidence and blow off the steam of his regular life.
He started off using his powers for his own purposes and paid dearly for that one mistake. It then allowed him to accept the responsibility that was thrust upon him. It is also where we get that great line that resonates within one's very soul every time it is said.
He had money issues, relationship issues, all the issues we deal with yet he still put the weight of the world on his shoulders and faced his fears. He makes mistakes, some are incredibly dark and devastating but at the end of the day, he does what is right and continues to learn and grow.
No matter how much time passes, I continue to love Spiderman and love the lessons learnt. And I am a huge Miles Morales fan, just ask that one kid in the cinema that shouted out his name with me. Our excitement was contagious.
I will end this blog the same way I started to remind us all that: With great power comes great responsibility.
