Lazer Eyes!

Image
Oops! I mean I got corrective surgery via Lasik but that is quite a mouthful so I prefer Lazer Eyes! Ho hum, so since I was 12 years old I had been wearing glasses with the addition of contact lenses at 16. I didn't really think anything of it even when there were whispers of a new technology to fix one's eyes. This mainly being that even if such a thing existed I would never be able to afford it so I let that rumour pass me by. I only got one eye infection from my contact lenses which is quite a feat. I have misplaced my glasses too many times to count on both hands and feet though. The Husband had been handy even from pre-husband years to help me locate my glasses in fits of giggles. No wrath was conducted on him because I was just so grateful to be able to see. I always wore my glasses except when I had my contacts on so my eyesight stayed pretty constant over the years. A few years ago, many folks we knew had The Surgery, and my curiosity started to peak. I had the initia...

It's Frankenstein's Monster okay!

Image
So for a while, it has fascinated me that this treasured book is misinterpreted so much that people actually argue about the fact that the monster is not called Frankenstein. After reading it the other day, I was compelled to write about this book and Mary Shelly herself. I had read the book years before but I didn't have a blog then. If you don't wish to receive any spoilers from a book written on 1 January 1818 then I suggest you skip this post. Anyway, Frankenstein was Victor Frankenstein, a young Italian man that goes off to study in Germany to pursue an obsession he built from a really young age. To me this early start to the obsession with overcoming death is fascinating. It stems from curiosity and grief as well as a reluctance from his father to truly listen to him.  Think back to your childhood, to when you were obsessed with something and excitedly shared this with your parents. That interaction is vital for a young mind and in this case, Frankenstein was ignored t...

The Far East..London

Image
I am at a new destination for a wedding, yes destination wedding! That can be ticked off the bucket list now, excellent. Since I have never been to East London which is in the Eastern Cape, I thought I should focus on the trip and highlights in this blog post. It is beautiful, the scenery especially the foliage is breathtaking. You know it is when The Hubby considers buying property here.  Of course, there is also the beach we are staying in Nahoon right by the Nahoon River and a short walk to the beach. I started writing this with the most magnificent view to inspire me. Having private beach access to Nahoon beach was a lovely perk to our Airbnb accommodation. There is a stunning pathway one can walk on but it can be a might scary in the dark and I am a scaredy-cat ..meow.  So the walk back was thrilling in a horror movie kinda way. Nothing phases The Hubby who reassured me that his Honey Badger would protect us. This is a flick knife that has proven to be quite handy on our ...

With Great Power...

comes great responsibility! I have been a Spiderman fan for as long as I can remember, which is a long time. I didn't see the Zulu dubbed version but I did catch the later series that gets used a lot for mock memes. Regardless Spiderman is and always will be my favourite superhero, marking me a webhead for life. I watched the classic cartoons and all the movies, I own several comic books and love all of it.  And so upon seeing the latest movie Spiderman: No way Home, my heart just burst. It was everything I wanted and more especially after being firmly for the multiverse and enjoying a range of different Spidermans over the years. Why do I like Spiderman? What makes him better or rather what makes him my favourite? Well, he is an underdog, a teenager who is facing everyday teenage angst with now the added responsibility of taking care of his neighbourhood. Hence the Friendly Neighbourhood Spiderman line - he is a kid going through the normal stuff with so much more spooned o...

Forget Resolutions, Focus on Intentions

Image
Happy New Year! It's the first blog of 2022, and I am sure you all are back to school, back to work, back to reality. 2021 was quite a year, but despite the losses and heartaches, there was also a lot of good in my life. So I am truly grateful for that and how the year shaped me. But all that is so last year let's talk about resolutions. Most of us think of the New Year and the promise of new beginnings and then write a bunch of items we want to accomplish before the year ends. Now that is not to say that many people accomplish their goals and find this to be a great way to stay motivated and focused. But a lot of us are on the other side of that boat. We set goals and then cave under the pressure of the high expectations we set for ourselves and then end the year disappointed. The reason for this is simple: Resolutions are binary and fixed, so you either succeed or fail. That can play havoc on the mind. Intentions can have several outcomes, and if things are not going as pla...

Finishing Strong

Image
Alrighty, so today is the last day of 2021. My goodness, it has been a year! It started with the loss of close family members and ended with a day of reflection. As I write this I hope that the New Year brings with it some brightness and good energy. Many have faced hardship this year and the collective mental health drain has been immense. Around the world, every one of us is exhausted mentally. I am not going to write any resolutions, well not in a way that these are normally written as to-do lists But rather as what I learnt this year and want to apply next year and beyond. The Husband and I endeavoured to give Widget and Smudge new experiences because that's what parents do for their children. So they went on three mini holidays that adhered to strict COVID-19 protocols and had no one besides us staying there, mostly: 1. Ons see Huisie 2. Wildberry Farm 3. Afrika Three very different experiences for the two woofs, meeting other dogs and animals especially horses and cows, fro...

Having a Growth Mindset

Image
I know, it's been three weeks but I got busy with a book. In fact, a book about Fixed and Growth Mindsets. It was so fascinating to me that now you have a blog about it. You're welcome. Don't worry, it's very condensed. Basically, a mindset is a thought or belief and this can be built up over time. A lot of what we believe and how we see the world has been based on childhood learnings. Things we learned at school, from our parents and other adults that influenced our lives. When we become adults then react to things we see or occurrences in our environment based on the mindset we have developed over time. There are various types of mindsets but the main two are fixed and growth and are polar opposites of each other. But keep in mind that mindsets are spectrums, so you won't necessarily have one or the other just think differently about certain things. Fixed mindsets entail thinking that success is based on talent and intelligence, not hard work. People who think t...
